PREVIEW: LQPV Boys' Basketball

By Kyle Gylsen - Madison

The Lac qui Parle Valley boys’ basketball team admittedly has some question marks heading into the 2015-16 season.

The Eagles finished their 2014-15 campaign with an overall record of 14-11, including an impressive mark of 11-4 in the Camden North conference.

LQPV suffered a couple of key losses to graduation, including three-year starters Garrett Olson and Austin Haas. Olson was a two-time all-conference selection, while Haas was the Eagles’ three-time defensive player of the year.

The good news is that the Eagles also bring back three quality returning players.

Senior Lucas Strand (6’2”/G) is a two-time all-conference player who averaged 15.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game last season. Senior Noah Jensen (6’4”/F) was an all-conference selection last season that averaged 10.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game a year ago. Senior Connor Oie (6’2”/G) contributed 3.3 points per game last season.

“(We have) three solid players with experience to lead us,” stated Lac qui Parle Valley head coach Barry Besonen. “(But, we have) very little to no varsity experience at the other spots.”

Besonen said the keys to the Eagles’ success this season are how quickly the team develops at the other two positions to help the top three, along with establishing a reliable bench and getting Jensen back to 100 percent after off-season back surgery.

The stiffest competition in both the Camden Conference and Section 3A should once again come from Central MN Christian, which finished third in the Class A state tournament last year. The Bluejays return six of their top eight from a season ago.
