K-M-S Claims Another 'Early Bird' Title

The season is new, but the team at the top is still the same.

For the fifth straight season, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won the season-opening Sauk Centre/Melrose "Early Bird Invitational" Wednesday in Melrose.

The Saints earned 225.5 teams points.  Osakis was second with 178, followed by Sartell-St. Stephen (143), Champlin Park (142) and Rocori (121).

Sauk Centre/Melrose finished sixth with 108.5 points, while Breckenridge (60) and Eden Valley-Watkins (38) rounded out the eight-team field.

KMS sent nine wrestlers into the finals and came away with six individual champions.

Winning titles for the Saints were seniors Nick Meyer (138), Jordan Engler (152) and Zach Carlson (182), along with junior Colton Kinney (285), sophomore Derek Krieger (132) and freshman Jonathan Tostenson (126).

Placing second were junior Karter VanHeuveln (220), freshman Israel Rodriguez (195) and eighth-grader Dylan Rudningen (113).

Engler was named Co-Most Valuable Wrestler, along with Rylee Molitor (120/10th) from Sartell/St. Stephen.
